A black and white photo of the Agrasen ki Baoli Stepwell in the centre of Delhi.

This dramatic black and white photo of the 15th century baoli in the centre of new Delhi is taken on a ledge near the bottom of the well and is taken looking up the steps. Like all stepwells it's entirely below ground.

The well is reputed to be haunted and the rough masonry has a certain hard bleakness. The local rock is hard enough for the sides of the well to be stable enough without the need for buttresses, unlike the well at Neemrana.

The gates open at 8am. While I was here three local schoolboys ran down the steps to see if anyone had fallen into the huge circular well shaft. Apart from them I was alone with bats and pigeons.
